About Course
The Musculoskeletal System module offers MPharm students a thorough understanding of the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacological management of conditions affecting bones, joints, and muscles. With a strong clinical focus, this module equips future pharmacists with the knowledge and skills required to support patients living with acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in both primary and secondary care settings.
The module begins with foundational knowledge of skeletal and muscular structures, connective tissues, and the roles of calcium, vitamin D, and bone remodelling in maintaining musculoskeletal health. Students will explore common musculoskeletal conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, muscular dystrophies, and back pain syndromes.
Pharmacological management is covered in depth, with a focus on analgesics (NSAIDs, opioids), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), corticosteroids, bisphosphonates, biologics, and supplements used in bone health. The module also addresses non-pharmacological approaches such as physiotherapy, lifestyle modification, and surgical interventions where relevant.
Key UK guidelines (e.g., NICE, NRAS) are integrated to provide a structured, evidence-based framework for clinical decision-making. Students will also develop their ability to assess risk factors, monitor therapy, counsel patients on long-term medicine use, and manage side effects such as gastrointestinal risk with NSAIDs or immunosuppression with biologics.
Interactive case studies, quizzes, and assessments are used to reinforce learning and build clinical reasoning skills, preparing students for placement, OSCEs, and day-to-day pharmacy practice.
