About Course

The Immunology, Inflammation & Rheumatology module provides MPharm students with a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of immunology, inflammation, and the pathophysiology of rheumatologic diseases. The module explores the immune system’s roles in health and disease, focusing on autoimmune conditions and the therapeutic management of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, and other conditions requiring biologic therapies.

Students will gain insight into the innate and adaptive immune responses, the mechanisms behind autoimmunity, and the role of inflammation in disease processes. The module also covers the therapeutic strategies used to manage these conditions, particularly the use of biologics, NSAIDs, DMARDs, and uric acid-lowering agents.

The module looks to integrate UK-specific guidelines and treatment frameworks (e.g., NICE, BSR), ensuring that students can apply evidence-based practices to manage inflammation and autoimmune diseases in clinical settings.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand the principles of immunology, including the roles of innate and adaptive immunity.
  • Identify the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation.
  • Evaluate the pharmacological treatments for autoimmune diseases, with a focus on biologics, DMARDs, and NSAIDs.
  • Understand the management of inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and gout, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.
  • Apply UK-specific guidelines (e.g., NICE, BSR) to optimise the management of rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions.
  • Assess the role of biologics in managing autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation, including the benefits, risks, and monitoring strategies.
  • Collaborate interprofessionally with healthcare teams in the management of inflammatory diseases, ensuring safe and effective therapy for patients.
