Course Content

Cardiovascular
The paper on Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology will comprehensively cover several key areas. **Cardiovascular Physiology (15%)** will explore heart anatomy and function, including the heart’s chambers, valves, and conduction system, as well as the phases of the cardiac cycle—systole and diastole. It will delve into haemodynamic, examining blood flow dynamics, blood pressure regulation, and the determinants of cardiac output. Electrophysiology will be discussed, focusing on action potential generation and propagation, and the roles of ions like Na⁺, K⁺, and Ca²⁺ in cardiac function. Additionally, vascular physiology will cover the types of blood vessels, mechanisms of vasoconstriction and vasodilation. **Cardiovascular Pharmacology (35%)** will address various drug classes, including antihypertensive agents such as ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics, detailing their mechanisms, uses, and side effects. It will also cover antianginal medications, anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, lipid-lowering agents, heart failure medications, antiarrhythmics, and vasodilators. **Cardiovascular Pathophysiology (20%)** will examine conditions like hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular heart diseases, and peripheral vascular disease, focusing on their development, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and management. **Diagnostic Tools and Clinical Assessment (10%)** will include electrocardiography, laboratory tests, imaging modalities, and risk assessment for cardiovascular diseases. **Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics in Cardiovascular Therapy (10%)** will cover the ADME processes for key cardiovascular drugs, their mechanisms of action, drug interactions, and contraindications. **Clinical Management and Evidence-Based Guidelines (5%)** will discuss management strategies for hypertension, heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, and arrhythmias, incorporating both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Lastly, **Special Topics (5%)** will address pharmacotherapy in specific populations, such as during pregnancy or in cases of renal impairment, emerging therapies and research in cardiovascular medicine, and strategies for patient education and medication adherence. This approach ensures a thorough understanding of cardiovascular health, disease, and treatment.
