About Course
The Men’s Health module provides MPharm students with a focused understanding of the physiological, pharmacological, and clinical aspects of health conditions predominantly affecting men. It equips students with the knowledge and clinical skills required to support the safe and effective management of male-specific health concerns in community and secondary care settings.
The module begins with an overview of male reproductive anatomy and hormone regulation, including the role of testosterone and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Students will then explore the pathophysiology and management of key men’s health conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction (ED), male infertility, prostate cancer, testicular disorders, and hypogonadism.
Pharmacological therapies are covered in detail, including the use of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, alpha-blockers, phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g. sildenafil), testosterone replacement therapies, and hormonal treatments used in prostate cancer. Emphasis is placed on mechanism of action, side effects, contraindications, and counselling points.
The module also considers broader public health and lifestyle factors impacting men’s health, including cardiovascular risk, mental health, smoking, substance use, and screening uptake. UK-specific guidelines (e.g. NICE and BAUS) are embedded throughout, alongside best practice for patient education, medicine optimisation, and pharmacist-led health promotion.
Interactive quizzes, case-based scenarios, and reflective activities help consolidate knowledge and build confidence in supporting male patients with complex health needs.
